A Plus Food Centre @ Sibu, Sarawak

When we arrive at the restaurant, Mr Y – our host for the night,  was deep in conversation with the restaurant owner, Mr Y has  a long history with A Plus, throughout dinner, he reminisced about the good old days back in the 70s -when business was good and money was easy – and he used to spend 25 days out of a month wining and dining at A Plus…

 What we ate that nite ( year 2010, not 1970s)

Sibu fried noodles – the noodles were thicker than the usual noodles back in KL, with a springy texture. Although just plainly fried with some dark sauces plus some vegetable and meat , this was very tasty – everybody had a  bowlful and we emptied the dish ( I thought noodles usually come last ? ) The tofu dish came at the same time with the noodles and thus before scooping passed the egg laden gravy,  I thought that  this was another noodle dish , talk about good camouflage ! apart from the tofu, the other main co-star was crab claws. I found  the gravy a bit too mild to give a lasting impression  Pork trotters with ‘mani’ vegetable ( sayur manis) – , the sayur manis were stir fried with eggs and provided a cushion for the  the pork trotters . The stewed trotters were heavenly- well marinated , tender , not too fat nor too lean.

Steamed prawns – the dissected prawns were steamed in egg topped with some garnishing of chili  and sour vegetable. The prawns were fresh but lacking was the sweetness In between food, , depending on who was talking –  the conversation flowed and switched effortlessly from  FuChow( which I do not understand a bit ), Mandarin,  Cantonese to English

Deep fried meatballs – the meatballs came with a side dish –vegetable in some chili sauce thingy. After biting passed the skin ( which was kinda chewy) the contents were a bit too soft , minced meat plus some yam maybe and some herbs, taste wise this was ok and went well with the side dish. Steamed fish – the fish was steamed in red yeast wine ( a FuChow specialty), I tried a spoonful of the resulting gravy, the wine plus the fish gave the gravy a sweetish alcoholic taste- which was pleasant. I find the fish meat to be a bit dry – overcooked maybe ?  Overall – an average meal – favourite dish ? I am torn between the Sibu noodles and the stewed trotters.

 There are 2 seating arrangements, at the ground floor is the kopitiam style set up ( plastic chairs and tables) and upstairs is air-conditioned with padded chairs and tables equipped with lazy susans
