The plan was to check out the makan place called ‘East of the Highway’ but as we were not particularly hungry which didn’t warrant having a sit down meal with a  few dishes, we dropped the initial plan. We drove along the row of shop houses, saw that there were a few makan shops, parked our car and did a closer scrutiny of the shops.

We saw that there was quite a crowd at this particular coffee shop, saw that they served noodles and whatnots –which was something that we were looking- so we plunked ourselves at one of the tables and surprise surprise…saw that the walls were adorned with newspaper cutting from The Star -Sam Cheong’s Food Trails , cuttings from Chinese papers, evidence of Ho Chiak visits ,  photos of Hong Kong celebrities like Moses Chen and a few others taken at Yoke Heng,..My My..i am impressed !

We asked the waiter for their specialty and he said ‘claypot lou shue fun’ – ok- we will have that, plus a plate of ‘wan tharn hor’ and stir fried sweet potato leaves.

The lou shue fun came  in a claypot ( yeah la..if it came on a hotplate- they would call it hotplate lou shue fun..duh !) ,  starchy looking gravy flood the claypot. I scooped some into the smaller bowls that they provided and took a slurp…Oh la la… …the gravy was very tasty -rich and sweet in a seafood kinda flavour ( like sharkfin soup) and weren’t as starchy as they look, it was kinda light really ( plus point),   slices of mushroom, spring onions and minced meat shared the pot with the lou shue fun, the noodles had a nice texture. The best part was the bits of deep fried dried prawns in the pot, these were  crunchy and very fragrant which brought the enjoyment of the noodles up another notch with every bite. The sambal was not bad too. I like I like I like..

Wat tharn hor – this was not bad too, enough of wok-hey ( the wok power) – this came with pieces of chicken , prawns,  pork liver ( sinful – yet so nice) and lotsa vegetable.

Stir fried sweet potato leaves –  the leaves were stir fried with garlic , the sweet potato leaves were soft and tender. This dish was light and was a good add-on to our noodles.

As we were enjoying our meal,  I saw the table (of 10) beside us being served  dishes like butter prawns , steamed fish, sweet and sour pork chicken and the works – (I wished I knew these people, I wished that they had invited me to their table to share the butter prawns.. I wished that they had invited me to their table to share the steam fish ..i wish…).  and from the comments that I heard ( yeah..since I wasn’t asked to join the table, I had to resolve to i eavesdroping) they seemed to be enjoying the meal very much and were already setting  a date for  the next visit to Yoke Heng

Overall – an enjoyable meal.
