Of all the Malaysian states, I think the pre-fix ‘Penang’ would probably be the forerunner – in terms of most used  names. ( I thought a few months back,  Penang’s  Ketua Menteri mentioned that they were looking at controlling the use of the word ‘Penang’ to prevent abuse of use, does that include naming of food stalls ? ) At the food courts around KL /KB/JB /etc  , I see stalls advertising :  Penang Char Koay Teow, Penang Lorbak, Penang Asam Laksa…as if by having the word  ‘Penang’ guarantees that the food would be great ?

This was not my first trip to Kopitiam Penang, I have fond (and launuah) memories of my first visit a few months back – the laksa, otak otak and char koay teow  ( and a rather uncontrollable  loud and embarrassing burp) and thought it’s about time for another visit to satisfy my cravings for Penang food .

The place is simply decorated with the  staple kopitiam set up- marble table tops and high backed wooden chairs

 The menu include :

 set meals

2 pax @ RM29.90 ; assam sting ray, thai sweet and sour tofu, salted fish bean sprout, 2 rice

3 pax @ 39.90, same as above but replace assam sting ray with curry fish head, 3 rice

5 pax @59.90 , same menu as 3 pax add : Fu yong egg and kangkong belacan, 5 rice

Noodles were priced at RM6.90 include; prawn mee, curry mee, assam laksa, koay teow th’ng, char koay teow, hokkien mee, Cantonese hor fun ..etc ..

Rice : nasi lemak, curry chicken rice, sweet and sour chicken rice, curry sotong rice etc.

Fried rice menu (RM6.90) , include : dancing fried rice, salted fish FR, hot dog FR, vegetarian FR etc .

And if you wish to order a la carte dishes, you have choice of varieties under the Fish /Fish fillet /prawn / sotong /chicken / beef/ venison menu

W started with ice kacang ( RM3.50) , mama mia…been sometime I have tasted good ice kacang . This was GOOD ! the shaved ice was fine and soft and rather generous amount of of condiments in the bowl : attap seeds, jelly, cincau, corn, red beans and lotsa roasted peanuts. there were enough of roasted peanuts to go with each spoonful of the yummy ice, and the crunchiness and the fragrant of the roased nut was really enjoyable. This deserve  almost 99/100 !

The char koay teow ( RM6.90) – The texture of the koay teow was good, it was  the thinner version of the normal teows, but the taste was a bit lacking , I could only taste the saltiness and  a tinge of spiciness, there weren’t enough of the wok-power and missing was the fragrant –possibly due to that they didn’t use lard (?) . Can’t fault them on the ingredients they were generous with the  ingredients , plenty of cockles, been sprouts, bits of eggs and pieces of chicken.

Prawn Noodles ( RM6.90), I do not normally get tempted by prawn noodles , but after seeing my makan companion going ga-ga over this, I had to try this. And boy , no regrets lah. This was superb prawn noodles, the soup was sooooo good, sooo aromatic, soo prawn-ish and sweet. Another almost perfect score

Chicken lobak (RM10)- they weren’t too heavy handed with the 5 spiced powder –which was a good thing . the chicken in the lobak had that melt in the mouth texture, the combination and the blend was very good.

The Owner came by our table a bit suspiciously when she saw that I was copying something from the menu and taking pictures, but later warmed up to us when I told her that I am writing a blog, Auntie later came by our table and asked us did we enjoy the meal. And when we commented that the prawn noodles was very good , she said that people usually blend the prawn heads and the shell to make the soup, but she feels that this is not very healthy for her customer and her sister did some experimenting and discovered the recipe of using ikan bilis+ chicken bones+ prawns made a good combination and it’s much healthier than the ‘traditional’ ingredients !!

Overall – a thoroughly enjoyable meal ! YUMMM
