Puchong Yong Tau Fu @ Seri Kembangan

We were hanging around Seri Kembangan..nothing much to do..drove around polluting the neighbourhood..looking for a place to have lunch..then decided to try our luck at Pusat Perdagangan Seri Kembangan… let’s try Puchong Yong Tou Fu. Good sign > there was a big crowd, and one other good sign was that families were eating there ( I assumed those seated at the same table to be from the same families, they might be from a different gene pool but anyway….) > which I take to mean that the price should be reasonable .

We were given a piece of paper with a list. From the ‘Soup Boil Choose’ section , we selected : Chili, ladies finger, bitterguord and Wan Tan. From the ‘Deep Fried Choose; section , we ticked  brinjal and spring roll. We also selected 2 chicken wrap, 1 bowl of rice and 1 serving of Chu Cheong Fun.

For drinks, I had Sour Lime Juice ( RM2.80) and my makan kaki had herbal tea (RM2.00).

The ‘ Soup Boil Choose’ yong tau fu (YTF)came in a big red bowl with soup filled to the brim and camouflaged by the vegetables ( I think this vegetable is called sayur manis?). Wellll…..a disappointment, the dish paste were bland, the bitterguord was hard and the wan tan was so-so. The  sayur manis were too tough to chew so  I decide not to strain my digestive system and ignored them..i mean ignore the sayur not ignore my digestive system..

The 2 pieces of YTF from the ‘Deep fried choose’ section looked so forlorn and lost in such a large plate. Thankfully the brinjal was soft and the spring roll fared better than their ‘soup boil choose’ gang. The YTF were priced at RM1.20 per piece (either the fried/ soup version)

Next was the chicken wrap (RM3.80/ wrap) … the meat was hard and tasteless..there were gravy in the wraps but the taste didn’t transfer to the chicken.. thumbs down !

After the meal, I had the gnawing feeling at the pit of my stomach (tape worm ?)….I think  my stomach was not happy with the food I was feeding it…

The bill came to RM21. We don’t think we will be back soon lah.

Yun Heong Yun Restaurant 源鄉園茶餐室@ Seri Kembangan, Serdang

The leaflet for Yun Heong Yun came with the newspapers and the specialty mentioned in the circular  include : fish head noodles  fish paste and bitterguord soup, pork noodles, steamed tofu, fish balls, fish cakes, fish paste fried egg, sambal fish,yong taufu, homemade teochew fish ball noodles, fresh prawn wantan noodles. The best part is that we know the location of the shop so off we galloped to Seri Kembangan.

The restaurant was having a quiet day ,  apart from our table,  one other table was taken up by a couple and the next table by a child ( must be taukeh’s son guarr) with his hands and eyes glued to a handheld console.

We decided to try : steamed egg, yong taufu and sambal fish

Steamed egg (RM8) : I was looking forward to  smooth, light steamed eggs but this didn’t meet that criteria lah, the texture was just average maybe a bit overcooked , there were generous amount of fish balls in the steamed egg though, the fish balls were quite ok, firm and springy. The fried onions on top of the steamed egg were a bit too soggy for our liking.

Sambal fish (RM7) : this was rather nice, the sambal was a mix of sour and not too spicy with bits of onions and ladies fingers. Interestingly the fish was deep fried -which made it a bit dry and hard, I would have thought a steamed version of the fish might have been better.

Yong taufu ( RM1.20/ piece) we had ordered a mixture : taufu pok, chili, brinjal and fuchok roll. This is the teowchew style I guess, as it was  ‘pure’  fish paste  as opposed to the Hakka version where the fish paste are mixed with salted fish, dried squid etc .We find the  YTF to be average, the vegetable ( sayur manis) that came with the soupy YTF were a bit tough

Overall- an average meal The total bill for the abovementioned + 2 plates of rice and 2 drinks came toRM25.80  ( no service tax)

Restoran Serdang Duck Wang @ Seri Kembangan

We saw the sign screaming of duck descending from the royal family  – ‘Duck Wang’ which in Chinese meant ‘king of Duck ‘ –  and couldn’t resist the lure, I guess our minds were still fresh with the royal wedding, hence as common subjects we wanted to have some form of connection with royalty – by eating the Duck King !

It was nearly 2 pm when we stepped in the restaurant , it was a run down old kopitiam kinda environment, not airconditioned . And best thing was , there was a big busy crowd.

We ordered a quarter of a duck,  the lady recommended the top part of the duck as it will not be as oily as the lower / thigh section , but I always find poultry breast too tough and dry so we went for the lower section. We wanted to try the roast meat but habis liao ! The lady recommended steamed fish which was one of the house specialty but as there were only three of us,  it was either the duck or the fish, we decide to forfeit the fish this time around. Other dishes : stir fried yau mak ( lettuce) with  garlic, tofu tossed in salted egg.

While waiting for the food to be served, we were entertained with the TV running the karaoke tapes showing Chinese songs from way way back in the 70s ..the songs of the 70s somehow are heavily laden with themes of deep love, deep hatred , love you until want to die and jump from a cliff , hate you until the heart bleeds and not something profound like current songs where :-  I’d catch a grenade for ya, throw my hand on a blade for ya, jump in front of a train for ya… take a bullet through  my brain for ya…:-)

For drinks, we ordered herbal tea and also the ‘golden lime’ , the golden lime was very yummy, like the ones mum used to make..i likeyy…sourish and sweet at the same time..

Stir fried yau mak with garlic – lightly flavoured and the yau mak was  crispy and fresh. Just the right ‘wok-hey’ ( wok-power). Simple and good

De Duck…the duck had a light dong-gwai ( Chinese herbs) flavour which was very pleasant . The best was that  the duck meat was moist and  tender. Hmmm….very nice..good duck this !

The aroma of the salted egg preceded the tofu dish..so aromatic . This dish arrived piping hot . The outer skin of the deep fried tofu was crispy and the inside retaining the soft gooey texture of tofu. This was a bit spicy as the dish was laced with bits of chili padi. The curry leaves enhanced the flavour of the dish. Yummm.. although already enjoyable- I think if there were  a teeny weeny bit more of salted egg  , the flavour could be further improved

The bill, including 3 plates of rice and 4 drinks came to RM43. An enjoyable meal ! Hurahh for the Duck King. Quacckkkkkkkkkkk
