It was a late Sunday morning,  rather  warm, and pampered folks like us want hawker food but in a cooler environment, so where do you head to ? 7 village lorrr. Another ‘cross-over’…. from the traditional kopitiam theme , to a ‘fast food’-ish  concept. And it seemed to be working, all the tables are filled and more are waiting in line.

The 2 mains at 7 village are ‘ koay teow soup /koay teow therng 粿條湯 and ramen拉麵. And you can order side dishes like lorbak, chicken feet, fish nuggets, chicken , stir fried vege.

The writing orr should I say, the menu is on the wall…

I cancelled my order of iced milo when I saw the others ordering tong sui , copy cat that I was…the tong sui for the day was –logan + pak kor, It wasn’t too sweet, the pak kor was nice and soft.. A welcomed change to my traditional cuppa milo

I am not a big fan of koay teow soup, but I have to admit.. the koay teow soup at 7 village is pretty good ! the texture of the koay teow is smooth and seemed finer than the usual koay teows, the minced pork was tasty, the fishball was springy, the soup was yummy.. another satisfied customer. Oh, for fishball fans  you can also order extra fishballs in your soup.

I didn’t get to try the ramen, but it looked pretty good to me too..u get the same minced meat +fishballs + sliced chicken , plus an extra half boiled egg.

We ordered some side orders, including :

 Chicken feet :

Not like the Thai version where they removed all the bone and served the ‘skin’, this is the steamed version with the bones intact, , the skin were soft and although served only with some fried onions , spring onions and  soy sauce, that seemed to enhance the taste. I enjoyed this.

kaki ayam

The lobak –minced meat  with 5 spice powder wrapped in fu churk (bean curd skin)  and then deep fried was popular, it was ‘cleared’ very quickly. Not bad. The 7 village version was thinner than what you might get at  the usual hawker stalls.

Overall, an enjoyable meal,7 village has 2 branches- the main outlet at Taman Aman Jaya, Off Raja Uda, and  for this meal, we had it at the other branch which was at Taman Bayu Mutiara , Bukit Mertajam,. If you have a choice, I would recommend eating at the main outlet- which is a bit more spacious and better ventilated, compared to the BM branch which can be warm and a bit stuffy.

When I first started this blog, there was always this thought at the back of my mind, what happens when  I run out of eating places  ? That phobia which is termed nomoremakanliaophobia, is still lurking at the back of my mind although in a lesser magnitude  nowadays…know no fear, eat now and worry not.. …that’s what accumulation of   saturated fat and triglycerides will do to you…

It was a lazy Sunday afternoon, we head on to Jln Kuchai Lama for lunch, my makan partner for that day was suffering from a toothache, so something soft and soupy was requested.  We parked our car, scanned the street and saw this cozy little shop which we hadn’t noticed before and after seeing that they do serve something soft and soupy, we decided to give it a try.

The menu, included   Ramen and a hometown noodles :

Ramen with minced pork and egg (RM6.90)

Ramen with crispy fried meat ( RM5.90)

Ramen fishball  (RM5.90)

Home town noodle special (RM5.00)

Or rice – bean rice with fried meat (RM5.90), bean rice with fried egg (RM5.00)

And for snacks, Fruit rojak (RM4) is available , crispy fried meat (RM3.50), fishball soup ( 5 pcs)

Tea-break special : White bread- kaya and butter, wholemeal bread with peanut butter. Tuna toasted bread.

The Toothacher ordered the Ramen fishball soup . Alice had a special for that day -Yam rice –yeehaaawwww..so, I ordered Yam Rice with crispy meat ( RM5.90). For drinks , the waitress recommended the house specialty Logan Milk..logan with milk…you sure about that..? anyway, being brave people out to conquer where angels fear to tread..… we ordered this, as well as the other recommendation – Special milk tea

The drinks arrived, the logan milk is white..umm…like what you expect milk to look like, I took a cautious sip…ehh…ehh..this is a pretty interesting …the  milk doesn’t overpower the  logan taste, so it’s like you get a sip and get this taste which is  50:50 milk and logan , can you imagine this ?.. Nice and refreshing  The special milk tea was smooth and creamy, not bad..

 drinks

Ramen fishball soup, the ramen had a nice springy texture, and came with quite a number of fishballs. The fishballs were not bad , springy although  not as fishy as I would expect. Soup was pretty ok too

 fishball

Yam rice with fried meat – you get crispy ikan bilis on top of the rice, crispy meat , cucumber slices and sambal on the sides. The Yam rice was fragrant with soft mushy yams pieces in it..hmm…the fried meat was tender ( even The Toothacher could enjoy this) and tasty. The sambal belacan looks spicy but wasn’t so, more towards the asam sambal, slightly sour, and it compliment the rice and meat very well. Nice

yam rice

Service was good , environment was nice, food was ok so – overall, a reasonably enjoyable meal,

As soon as we took a seat, a man came around to take our order for drinks .

For drinks, they have fresh juices, Chinese tea or cooling tea/ leong char . I opted for lime juice+sour plum and Chunny asked for Chinese tea. Come to think of it , I am getting really predictable in the drinks department, it has been a few repeats of lime+sour plums or ice kacangs- I must be more original lah, ok, will get a Guiness for next meal !

After ordering our drinks, an auntie came and ask us what we would like for food. This is my first trip to Seng Kee, this eatery is famous for it’s claypot lou-shue-fern ( rat-tail noodles), so we must order that lah, also ordered the BBQ pork noodles and 6 pieces of yong tau foo.

Indian uncle selling lottery came about, no takers. I don’t think I have ever  come close to getting the last 2 digit right, – so I sorta given up on this ‘investment’. Although a few years back, I did ask my colleague to get me a copy of  the ‘book of lucky numbers’ to see if I can make some money from my myriad of dreams every night.

Those of you that do not have a clue on what I am talking about, this little book has (almost) a number for everything, e.g. putting on lipstick – is 747, pisang goreng seller – 605,  linoleum – 922 . Linoleum also got one lah…so hor-liau lahhh !!

Back to food…

The claypot noodles turns out to be a bit overated, it’s pretty ok  but maybe not as great as what I expect from the reviews that I read. The cooking style is ‘wet’ and one thing for sure, there’s a lot of stuff in the claypot, you get a lot of mince pot, prawns ( also an raw egg on top) and the serving is not small, for small eaters, I think 1 serving would be suffice for 2 persons. (RM8 / 1 serving).

The BBQ pork noodle (RM9)  was a bit of a letdown, the noodles was too dry and has a  spongy texture, the BBQ pork was pretty good though, the fat layer and the lean layer blended nicely with a bit of chew. We put down a note to just order the BBQ next time sans noodles lah.

The nicest surprise was the Yong Tau Foo (RM0.90/ piece) ..this is the best dish out of the three, the fish paste is good, we ‘dissected’ the fried tofu but couldn’t find any fish paste in it, wonder was it intentional -anyway, the tofu taste great -crispy on the outside and soft and tofu-ey on the inside, so I didn’t mind missing the fish paste too much.

When walking out of Seng Kee, did a quick scan of the tables as we walk passed ( tables were set up on the kaki-lima as well) and nearly all of them have ordered claypot noodles.
