Little Tree Cafe @ Kuchai Lama

Posted by pegasuskl on October 29, 2009

Hadn’t met V for sometime and finally ‘negotiated’a suitable time for a meet-up, I wasn’t sure what was V’s inclination in food, but her simple pre requisite was ‘ anything, as long as it’s tasty’. Hmmm…should I suggest somewhere tried and tested ? or venture to the unknown ? Well, venture to the unknown won, hands down.

As we stepped into Little Tree Cafe, we found it  to be a cozy and comfortable, where you could yak in low voices for hours or get busy with  your laptop as they offer free wi-fi. The cafe occupies 2 shoplot, which must mean rather good business ?

We weren’t sure what to order and asked the waiter to recommend something. V was having Little Milan Chop, I wanted rice ( yeah, typical Asian) and asked for the  butter chicken lotus rice

For drinks, they have  health tea series, premium Italian coffee and fresh juices.  I ordered  the  Refresher – which was Celery + cucumber + sour plum. The strong taste of celery overpowered the other ingredients, very refreshing. Do not order this if you don’t like celery, duh !

V had Rainforest – which was a combination of guava + green apple + sour plum ( and maybe some other stuff), this was rather good. V was rather happy with her drink. (our drinks were RM7.50 each)

 drinks

Butter chicken with lotus rice ( RM9.90), this was prettily presented. The rice topped with shredded dried seaweed came in a lotus leaf parcel, and a rather generous portion of bite sized chicken pieces drenched in some creamy gravy. The rice was fragrant, rather like chicken rice. and the chicken was interesting, the taste is not unlike  the taste of butter prawns complete with curry leaves and all. This was nice.

 lotus rice

The Little Milan chop (RM15.90)  is a undercover chicken dish…hmmm…the chicken is sandwiched between 2 slices of ham and generous amount of cheese, the dish also came with a dollop of mash potato +cauliflower + broccoli  . this was creamy cheesy rich, the gravy was tasty, the combination of the ham+cheese+chicken was rather good. V was smiling ear to ear and will start to recommend Little Tree to her circle of contacts.

 Little milan

Overall, I would rate this as good , in terms of food , service and environment.

Thanks for the treat V !!

Kafe Thai Pan Delights @ Kuchai Lama

Posted by pegasuskl on October 6, 2009

We first saw Kafe Thai Pan Delights when we were having a meal at a cafe a few months back ( which sadly had closed down) and on that particular day , it was the opening day for Thai Pan, I made a mental note to try it out someday. Fast forward a few months -read a good  review in The Star ( click here for article)  and that hasten the trip.

We weren’t sure what to order, so we asked the person serving us to give us some recommendations , and from her list, we chose – Fried Pad Thai (RM6.80) ,Green Curry Chicken with rice (RM7.80),  Otak2 seafood (RM12) and Thai Cendol (RM2.50). Their other popular dishes : belacan fried rice, tom yam soup ( chicken/ seafood). Mango sticky rice, pineapple fried rice, beef ball noodle soup, papaya/mango salad and   chicken feet + pamelo.

Fried Pad Thai – the thinner version of  koay teow had a nice springy and smooth texture, It was slightly sweet with a tinge of spice. The dish came  with taugeh ( beansprouts), pieces of chicken, prawns, carrot shreds, egg and roasted peanut. Nice…

 noodles

Green curry chicken with rice – you get rice, a bowl of green curry, egg shreds and a few pieces of fried dried fish ( not salted fish) plus slices of cucumber and tomato. The curry was rich , fragrant and so tasty-. the chicken slices were tender, the longbeans were crunchy , the gravy was yummy , oh boy, I can’t get enough of it. Aroy ChingChing (very delicious). Goes very well with rice . Perfecto !

 green curry

Otak2 seafood – this dish arrived wrapped in foil and as I always had the impression that otak2 should be solid, it was kinda surprising to see this dish was kinda wet and ‘loose’. And there seemed to be plenty of chili in it, which got me kinda worried. Looks can be deceiving though .. it wasn’t too spicy and had some tinge of sweet in it. The otak2 chunks/ flakes were creamy and rich. Other ingredients include : cabbage, sotong ( squid) and  prawns. Another dish that didn’t disappoint.

 Otak2

Thai Cendol – we ordered this because we expected it to be the type of chewy, springy ( and often colourful) cendol we get in Thailand, but this turn out to be our regular green cendol. The cendol was served with wedges of sweet potato. The santan and gula melaka wasn’t too heavy. I find the cendol ( which kinda melt in the mouth) a bit too soft for my liking So, when we were settling the bill, and after praising the delicious food, I commented about the cendol and was corrected by the cashier( looks like the owner) that, that is the specialty of their homemake cendol and their customers liked this so much (oh oh..but it was still too soft for my liking lah )

 cendol

Overall, a very enjoyable meal. i would love to go back again and try the other dishes.

Kum Kee Chicken Rice金記燒蠟雞飯 @Kuchai Lama

Posted by pegasuskl on August 3, 2009

This is another one of Wiki Lim’s recommendation – in his wise words – roasts equivalent to KL city’s quality, that certainly sounds promising. He passed me the name card ‘Kum Kee Chicken Rice’, with that in hand, I headed to Taman Gembira, Kuchai Lama, bearing in mind to look out for the prominent landmark – the 4 faced Buddha.

Driving into the housing estate, saw the 4 faced Buddha, saw the only kopitiam ( Mooi Mooi) around the vicinity and a stall with roast pork and chicken, but ain’t see no Kum Kee lerrr  ? So, this should be it guarr ? but to be on the safe side of things, i called Wiki for confirmation. Incidentaly, I just missed him by a few minutes as he was heading home after tarpau-ing lunch at the same shop.

4 faced buddha

We ordered a plate of roast pork + char siew +roast chicken. And for other additional dishes, this was provided by the kopitiam, who supply drinks as well as dishes like : stir fried vegetable and tofu, we ordered drinks and stir fried kailan.

The place seemed a bit run down, no proper lighting, old rickety furniture but what a crowd ! it was a full house when we were there for Sunday lunch. Wiki warned me beforehand , be ready with reading materials- for it could be a long wait.

Lucky for us, it wasn’t too long a wait , less than 15 minutes- there was another stall in the kopitiam, that sells noodles and from my observation, most of the patron were having roasts rather than noodles lah.

The siew yoke ( roast pork) was pretty good, the skin was crunchy and the meat was tender yet firm. The roast chicken , again, pretty good, it had some kinda fragrant ( not sure how to place it), maybe from the roasting process. Of the three,  I enjoyed the char siew the most, the taste was yummy, tinge of Chinese wine, slightly sweetish, I forgot to asked for the half fat-lean meat version, which would have been even better.

 roasts

I saw some people going up to the counter and scooping up soup from a pot, not to be left out ( kiasu) , I too headed for the soup pot for the free soup , the soup taste just like normal  chicken soup.

The stir fried kailan, was enjoyable, green and crunchy and the kailan shoots were quite tender, it was a bit salty though.

 kailan

The verdict :  Enjoyed the good meal. Total meal ( abovementioned dishes plus 2 drinks and 2 servings of rice) ~ RM24.

After the meal, we headed to the 4 faced Buddha across the road, Ommmm….may the chicken and the piggy forgive me…
