Jolliebee @ Manila

Posted by pegasuskl on May 5, 2009

This is the only pix I have of the dinner we had at Marina in Davao, btw it was a good seafood meal.

Anyway, after a ~1.45hr flight from Davao, we were again back in Manila. While waiting for the driver to pick up  the cargo [our host had bought boxes of pamelos from Davao (these are about the size of your palm, not like the Malaysian version, and  very sweet and juicy)] we went for a  snack . We had already stepped into Shakeys  when Mr host asked me, is this ok ? and then, I made my request – ‘can we try Jolliebee ?’ – which was next door.

I hadn’t had a chance to try Jollibee, which  is the no 1 fast food chain in Phils , beating McD, KFC or Pizza. Jollibee is a phenomenal success story: what began as a two-branch ice cream parlor in 1975 offering hot meals and sandwiches became incorporated in 1978 with seven outlets to explore the possibilities of a hamburger concept. Thus was born the company that revolutionized fast food in the Philippines. To read  more, please click here

This is the mascot

 mascot

 Jolly Crispy fries..

 fries

Amazing Aloha – double beef patty , strips of bacon, cheese, and a slice of pineapple , this is Mr Host’s favourite

 burger1

I had  the Palabuk +Chicken set

 set

What u get in that set  :-

Palabuk – the noodles is something like mee-sua, served with Palabok sauce with toppings of pork chicharon bits, tuna flakes , sauté pork, shrimps and slice of egg. The Palabuk sauce is like peanut sauce. Interesting,

Chicken – fried chicken, normal

Rice – this is the one wrapped in paper, comes with the sauce ( in container)- which taste like the gravy that you find on KFC mash potatoes.

Vege- biasa lah

Chocolate brownies—YUMMyy…very chocolaty and rich

Laguna Garden Café @ Cebu, Philippines

Posted by pegasuskl on May 3, 2009

Our second night in Cebu, and after a days’ work, we  head on to Laguna for more local Filipino food. The place was pretty crowded, most of the tables were occupied (what economic downturn, you might ask ?). Nice ambience, wooden paneling, leafy potted plants ,  chairs with weaved rattan backing, dark solid wooden table,

 plant

Rice was served in your personal pretty little ceramic urn

 rice

Chincharon Bulaklak (Deep fried pork intestine) – pork intestine fried to a crisp , you can dipped these fried yummies into the accompanying (I think it’s vinegar + bits of freshly cut chilies. Yummy, these would go well with beer, I think I can finish bowls of these…( the intestine, not the beer..)

 pork-intestine

We also had Pork knuckles ( Crispy pata)-again , hey, it’s 2 days in a row of pork knuckles, the table was divided 50:50 on which porky knuckle was better, the one at Laguna or at Golden Cowrie. Anyway, I missed the photo op, so have to settle with the picture of the roast pork instead, this was nice, lean meat plus oily meat, well marinated and tender. This was served with the vineger+chili dip, and marinated ginger shreds..yumm

 pork

Tangigue Inihaw (Grilled Blue Marlin )– meaty chunk of grilled blue marlin, as this was plainly grilled, you get to savour the sweetness of the fish without any sauce or marinate getting in the way.

 blue-marlin

Nokos Inihaw (Grilled cuttlefish )- this was fresh but slightly on being very chewy- must be because of the size that made it a bit tough. Our host named  this ‘chewing gum’  .The meat was fresh and sweet, and I admit ( no guilt) , there were no hesitation in getting a share of the cuttlefish eggs.

cuttle-fish

Kapitan chicken- pretty much like what we find back home, chicken pieces wrapped in pandan leaves. Not bad.

 kapitan-chicken

Lengua estofado (braise cow tongue ) ,I hadn’t tasted cow tongue ever, there were about  3 seconds of hesitation- and ehh..the texture of cow tongue not bad la..i expected tongue to be something soft and spongy but this feels just like very tender pieces of meat , nice…

tongue

Kare kare with bagoong – this was a dish my colleague wanted to try, the magic word for him seemed to be ‘peanut sauce’ and ‘oxtail’  . the 2 Malaysians were given the honour of  trying out the dish first , there were meats, vege like long beans in the claypot, after the first taste, we weren’t impressed, I was expecting something like a satay sauce, this tasted bland  with a milk-powder-ish taste,. Then we passed this down the table and immediately the waiter was summoned.  It seemed that one important ingredient was missing – the salted fish. Oh AhhHH….the waiter immediately appeared with a little container with something that look like cincalok ( fermented little shrimps). We were told to re-try the dish by scooping some kare-kare onto our plates and to this add the ‘cincalok’ …AHhhhh…very much improved liao. ( later someone sheepishly admit ( NO, WASN”T ME) that the ‘cincaluk’ was already at our table before they served the kare-kare , just that we didn’t know what it was for..)

 kare-kare

the mis-placed bagoong ( shrimp paste) or what i refer to as cincalok

cincaluk

One thing I noticed, the Filipinos love Coke, must be the American influence, I guess ? Am not too sure we have Zero Coke, do we ?

 coke

Total  bill ( plus drinks) came to 3534Peso which is about RM 258 ( for 8 pax, we had 2 servings for some of the dishes), which is pretty reasonable, horr ?

Golden Cowrie Native Restaurant @ Cebu, Philippines

Posted by pegasuskl on April 29, 2009

We flew from Manila to Cebu via Cebu Pacific (click here for the website ) which took about 1hr 15 mins.  The interesting part about flying Cebu Pacific is, they organized quiz on the flight ! The stewardess will ask the questions and the passenger that has her/his  hands up first gets to answer and win a prize , A tote bag or something. Usually 3 questions will be asked and centers around the air carrier, , e.g name 5 international destination that Cebu Pacific flies to, so if you plan on winning something, do some homework first ! I wonder will MAS or Airasia have something like this in the future ?

Our host had kindly arranged for someone to pick us up from the airport and we decide to go directly to the restaurant for a drink before meals rather than to check-in.And oh..we are having dinner at the Golden Cowrie Native Restaurant -which serves Filipino food.

While waiting for our host- the guys had some San Miguel ( Filipino beer)  while I opted for a coconut ( =Buko in tagalog) drink . My drink didn’t arrive in it’s original container ( coconut) but in a glass, and it was  only ¾ full ! ( or ¼ empty – you pessimmist ! )

Nice, friendly , casual  ambience at the Golden Cowrie , wooden tables, wooden deco, warm lights and plates lined with banana leaves. Rice is bottomless and the waiters come around carrying the rice in a container hung around their torso.

Baked scallops…hmm..my eyes lit up when this first dish arrived. The fresh scallops were baked in rich santan – like ayam percik style..yummyyy

 scallops

Tuna Fingers – minced tuna formed into fingers and fried, this was pretty good, goes very well with the mayo sauce

 tuna

Lapu-lapu (a type of red grouper) soup -this is like tom-yam soup minus the spiciness and extra on the sourness, this was overly sour for me.

 fish-soup

Fried squid in sauce- our host mentioned this is the traditional way of cooking squid- in thick black gravy, this was pretty nice, fresh and springy squid.

 squid

Grilled fish – the sweetness of  fresh fish grilled over a low fire… -ahhh…

 grill-fish

Crispy pata (Pork knuckles ) -the outer skin was deep fried to a crisp, the meat was tender and well marinated. Oink if you love pork. OINK OINK OINK

 pork-knuckles

Sisig – this is minced pork plus chili, onion, egg seasoned with calamansi ( lime) and vinegar – on a sizzling hot plate , the original sisig was made from chopped part of a pigs head -ears, snout, brain etc but now ’simplified’ to minced meat. This was nice. Goes well with beers. My host commented- ‘very high in cholesterol , but never mind, we don’t eat this everyday’ and later add on to that ‘ eat today, die tomorrow never mind’

 sisig

I was already full..but who could resist the temptation of a Halo-halo ( halo = ‘mix’ in Tagalog).  Halo-halo is  the Filipino version of the ice-kacang… What a wonderful way to end a very enjoyable meal…..

 helo-helo
