A very late posting for a meal we had before Christmas 2011…

This was another promotional meal from Groupon , the total meal was valued at RM58.20 and one only have to pay RM24. Err..not easy to resist..and at that time we thought that since nobody was going to invite us  for Christmas dinner, we have to invite ( and pay) ourselves , desperate time call for desperate measures !

Before this trip, I have never been to UOA Bangsar.  There was a crossroad  and we saw the UOA building on our right , we then made a U-turn at the traffic light and to get to the car park – we had to  pass  through a rather sad alley which then led us to the brightly lit car park…

The Groupon promo :

For appetizer, Chunny had the turkey mango crepe and I chose the pumpkin soup. The turkey mango crepe : it was  a pleasant surprise ( although it did say it was turkey mango crepe) to bite  into mango which adds a freshness  to the crepe , this was also aided by  the lettuce,  the crepe was light and served warm..not bad..

Pumpkin soup – umm.. this taste like pumpkin soup, nothing unusual. Additional point given as the bun was warm.

For the main course, it was not too difficult a choice, one would logically chose the more expensive option  amongst the lot. So we chose the seafood and the grill and left out the ‘cheaper’ spaghetti. Yeah, we are practical  folks. Chunny had the fisherman’s wharf – which was a seafood platter consisting of deep fried scallops, calamari rings, prawns and fish. Taste wise, not too bad, the batter was light and did not overpower the sweetness of the seafood.

The Farmer selection was not bad at all, the meat were tender and well marinated, what I liked best was the gravy, I  am not sure what gravy it was, but I likeyy. I am not someone who like gravy on my food, but I made an exception for this, it looks like black pepper but didn’t have that hot pepperish taste, it had a bit of sweetish taste to it too.i don’t know what it was but I like it lah.

For the appetizer, we chose one each of creme brule and cake of the day- which happen to be green tea cake. When the cake arrive, it looked kinda minute to be costing RM7 as stated on the Groupon deal. The cake was not too bad but we didn’t have much to go around as it was such a tiny piece, I find the texture of the creme brule a bit too liquid-y and it didn’t have that texture and taste of richness to it.

Overall, an enjoyable meal..

C had generously invited me out for tea that Saturday , she has been singing praises about this place like – forever and had just been there again,  a day before our scheduled tea, but when asked if she would like to change the venue, she was pretty adamant that we go to  Bread Basket.

I have never been to Bangsar South (-please click here for the website), the best thing is that parking is free for the first 2 hours,  and on top of that traffic is not too bad. The place was rather quiet for a weekend, maybe it’s still rather new and some of the tenants hadn’t moved in. The other attraction is Carrefour ( it’s no plastic bag day- everyday, so remember to BYO, although at the time of visit, there were paper boxes available for carrying your shopping).

But I digress..

Being the regular, C had the honour of ordering and she chose 3 of her favourite pastries : Curry puff, Pineapple bar and Chicken mushroom pie.

Other pastries available but not limited to  :  Strudels : tomato  or mushroom ; Puffs: Tuna, Potato, Chicken curry ; Bars : Apple ,Almond ,Custard , Pineapple ; Mini chicken mushroom pie, croissant, chocolate roll

below : chicken curry puff, mini chicken mushroom pie and apple bar

Below : chocolate roll and crossant

below : Tomato strudel, potato puff and mushroom strudle

The chicken curry puffs (RM1.80)  were C’s favourite . they were flaky and crispy,   the filing were not that  spicy and rather tasty. The chicken mushroom pie (RM1.90)  had generous amount of mushroom, taste was reasonable. Of the 3 pastries that we ordered , my favourite was the pineapple bar ( RM2.10) – these had chunky bits of pineapple in it as opposed to pineapple jam, it wasn’t overly sweet. I will have to return to try out the apple and almond bar

C chose to sit inside the air conditioned shop, which I find to be a bit awkward as this was the only table available inside the shop , and  there were many tables outside – but I guess she enjoyed talking to the guy manning the counter and we got to catch up on the news with the newspapers provided on the racks.

Bread Basket also offers German coffee or a variety of  imported tea ( Earl Grey, Peppermint, English Breakfast , Lemon etc)  for RM3.50

Overall, it was a pleasant visit and the price was rather reasonable comparing to other cafes, the meal cost C – RM11 ( including 1 coffee and 1 tea)  and did I tell me about the 2 hours free parking at Bangsar South ?

BB also do delivery [NB:  there is a minimum order quantity ,  delivery charges are imposed  for areas outside of Bangsar]

 Location and contact details :

Ever since reading about Restoran Sun Huat Kee which was featured in Food Trails ( in The Star), I have been looking forward to eating that bowl of curry laksa and also having a plate of  Soo Kee beef noodles (without having to go to Jalan Imbi)

Sun Huat Kee is a kopitiam with many stalls selling various kinda food, but since it’s Bangsar we are talking about, it’s a  higher end kinda kopitiam establishment , nicer tables and chairs, nicer looking stalls and probably nicer looking customers  :P

I was torn between having curry laksa or the beef noodles, but since my fellow diner does not eat beef, guess that meant I was having Moo-moo for lunch ( well, the advantage was, I do not have to share my food)

Tak Kee curry laksa ( RM5.50), what is not to like about curry laksa ?  well, mainly is the guilt, I guess , about consuming santan, secondly- global warming and thirdly..err..ok, eat first, think later. Co-inhabiting the bowl with the noodles : cockles, long bean, brinjal, taugeh, taufu pok, fu pei ( bean curd skin) and chicken. And the star of the bowl- the gravy. Rich santan , fragrant and not too heavy..ahh…very nice, the gravy struck me as being very refined and elegant.. elegant gravy, huh ? kari mee

Jalan Imbi Soo Kee ( tai shue tou) beef noodles, this was full  of promise ( especially at the price tag of RM8). The first spoonful, hmmm.. good wok hei (  the wok power), second spoonful, umm..a bit tasteless one gehh ? can’t be mahh…try another spoonful, yes, still tasteless, add more soy sauce, nope, doesn’t help, dumped the whole saucer of soy sauce into the noodles, nope , doesn’t help. This was a real disappointment, I struggled to finished the rather big serving of noodles and the notion of admitting defeat crossed my mind many times, but I must prevail (and not waste that hard earned RM8 ) . Maybe the chef forgot to add something in this particular bowl of noodles ? The only consolation was that the beef was tender and springy.beef noodles

Overall, good curry laksa and sadly, bad experience of beef noodles, might return to try out the fish ball noodles and meat balls noodles which seemed  to be rather popular at the time of our visit.
