Ever since reading about Restoran Sun Huat Kee which was featured in Food Trails ( in The Star), I have been looking forward to eating that bowl of curry laksa and also having a plate of  Soo Kee beef noodles (without having to go to Jalan Imbi)

Sun Huat Kee is a kopitiam with many stalls selling various kinda food, but since it’s Bangsar we are talking about, it’s a  higher end kinda kopitiam establishment , nicer tables and chairs, nicer looking stalls and probably nicer looking customers  :P

I was torn between having curry laksa or the beef noodles, but since my fellow diner does not eat beef, guess that meant I was having Moo-moo for lunch ( well, the advantage was, I do not have to share my food)

Tak Kee curry laksa ( RM5.50), what is not to like about curry laksa ?  well, mainly is the guilt, I guess , about consuming santan, secondly- global warming and thirdly..err..ok, eat first, think later. Co-inhabiting the bowl with the noodles : cockles, long bean, brinjal, taugeh, taufu pok, fu pei ( bean curd skin) and chicken. And the star of the bowl- the gravy. Rich santan , fragrant and not too heavy..ahh…very nice, the gravy struck me as being very refined and elegant.. elegant gravy, huh ? kari mee

Jalan Imbi Soo Kee ( tai shue tou) beef noodles, this was full  of promise ( especially at the price tag of RM8). The first spoonful, hmmm.. good wok hei (  the wok power), second spoonful, umm..a bit tasteless one gehh ? can’t be mahh…try another spoonful, yes, still tasteless, add more soy sauce, nope, doesn’t help, dumped the whole saucer of soy sauce into the noodles, nope , doesn’t help. This was a real disappointment, I struggled to finished the rather big serving of noodles and the notion of admitting defeat crossed my mind many times, but I must prevail (and not waste that hard earned RM8 ) . Maybe the chef forgot to add something in this particular bowl of noodles ? The only consolation was that the beef was tender and springy.beef noodles

Overall, good curry laksa and sadly, bad experience of beef noodles, might return to try out the fish ball noodles and meat balls noodles which seemed  to be rather popular at the time of our visit.

Chunny has been eyeing Baba Low’s since we saw the shop during our visit to our visits to Baan Ah Haan Thai  , so it was a dream come true ( err..slight exaggeration there) when we finally stepped into Baba Low’s on that Saturday pm for lunch.

A party had occupied a long table and were just leaving when we entered the shop but mostly there were patrons of two or fours having their meals and most of the tables were taken up.

The writing’s on the wall or more precisely the menu is on the blackboard lah, as u can see …

 menu1

There are main dishes like nasi nyoya ( this is either chicken rendang or fish), nyoya laksa, nasi lemak, mee siam, ayam O ( said to be something like chicken rice- but u can either have rice or noodles) . Side dishes like tauhu sumbat, pie tee, popiah ( spring rolls- the unfried version), otak2, chicken wings are also available.

we squinted for a while to read the menu and bargain amongst ourselves on who will order what and finally decided on Nyoya laksa for Chunny and Mee Siam for myself, with 1 side dish of Otak2 to share and 2 cendols.

A Pakcik in songkok came to deliver our bowls of cendols.

 cendol

Taste wise, this was average, the santan/gula melaka ( palm sugar)  taste wasn’t thick  enough for me, the cendol also appeared intensely green , we found 3 red beans in the cendols

The Mee Siam came in a basket lined with brown waxy paper, sorry, I deleted the pix by mistake, so you would have to take my word for it. there were shreds of cucumber on the side plus some other stuff ( I forgot as I didn’t take notes and I don’t have a pix to refer to, what a bad reporter I am !)  half a boiled egg as well, a limau kasturi too. I squeezed the whole limau of which I probably shouldn’t as the mee hoon turned out a bit too soggy ( my own fault). The mee hoon texture was ok, but the lime juice + the already present chili sauce in the noodles tasted just ok.

Chunny’s Nyoya laksa looks more promising

 nyoya-laksa

When delivering the bowl, the waitress explained  that because the egg was very small, she put in the 2 halves instead of just one – so if you order the same bowl, don’t expect to get 2 halves, ok ? there were pieces of tau fu pok, shreds of cucumber, prawns and cockles,  the gravy is like what you get with curry mee, although  ingredients like cucumber is probably not what you will find in a bowl of curry mee.  According to Chunny, it lacked some Ummppp..  this was average,

There were some commotion at the counter, and we could hear the lady at the counter apologizing that it’s the particular staff’s first day at work, blah blah blah, at that time, we had finished our noodles and there were still no sight of the Otak2. After a reminder, the waitress came to our table and said that she will re-heat the dish for us as it had gone cold. The Otak2 arrived flanked  on both sides with slices of cucumber and bread.

otak2

I hadn’t seemed Otak2 served with bread before..well, maybe it’s the Nyoya’s version, , the texture was dry, rough and grainy, the fish meat was still in a whole piece rather than the blended pasty version  , the taste was spicy and ( overly) sweetish, , i would  rate this average  and surprisingly Otak2 and bread is a pretty good combination !

Baba Low’s 486 is open daily from 7 am – 10 pm. Breakfast is all day long , they have a traditional breakfast set at RM2.50 and RM5.00 for the western set. This place serves halal food ( judging from the patron anyway) and u also get free Wi Fi

Mr Boss invited us  to Bangsar Seafood Garden for a pre-christmas / Chinese new year meal. There was a Special Year End package available- the 4 packages   -Package A -RM488 ++ per table or 10 ; Package B -RM 588 ++ ; Package C -RM688++ and Package D RM1,288++ .

Mr Boss must be feeling generous but not  generous enough  to select the RM1,288 package but settled for Package C, I guess I should be thankful that it was not  the RM488 porhh. We called a few days earlier to make reservations and managed to get a private room.

When the waiters (they do not looked local) brought in the yee sang, they place that on the side table and two of the seemed to be in heavy discussion ( in some foreign language) for more than 5 minutes, then later, one of them went out and a Chinese waitress came in and started to open the pre-packed packets  and pour them onto the big plate.

Then we started to toss the yee sarng and shout out all the auspicious words ‘to good health’ ; ‘ prosperity’, ‘good business’  ’good blog traffic’ etc etc . there were a lot of the floury crunchy ( muruku-ish) stuff in the yee sang, I managed to get a slice of salmon, but am not sure I see the snow pears.

yee-sang

Next dish was ‘shark’s fin broth with seafood and scallop’  this was tasty and I have to admit that I had a second helping ..although I do not support the killing of sharks for the fins and should have boycotted this dish sorry..

Next – ‘ steamed chicken with bamboo basket with lotus leaf’ I think there was half a chicken in this, the chicken was cooked to very tender and it was very easy to be ‘dissected’ , there were dried mushrooms, snow peas, carrots as well as fried wanton in the bamboo basket. We enjoyed this dish and the bamboo basket was quickly emptied

chic

They brought a portable stove to the table and then placed a claypot on the flame, we were told to leave that to cook for 10 minutes, being lazy, we asked the waitress to do the cooking and watch the time. The gravy was ok although I find the fish was a bit too fishy. This dish is – Stewed cod fish in claypot ‘home’ style

cod-fish

For the next dish, Grill hot stone prawns – they also had to bring some ‘gadgets’ to the table, which included a big saucepan, the uncooked prawns were put inside the pan and then covered and voila.. one of my colleague caused a bit of a commotion as she had to duck to avoid the hot steam that were blowing furiously at her.. The prawns turned red in a matter of seconds, and it was very good. The prawns was ‘just’ cooked and had the sweet and fresh taste.

prawns

After the prawns, I think that the cook start to be a bit too generous with the use of salt… Braised  stuff oysters with ‘fatt choy’ was next, there was something ( like a fish paste / meat thingy) wrapped around part of the oysters , the rich and unique taste of dried oysters served with thick shitake mushroom and broccoli, this was good but we would enjoy it more if it weren’t so salty.

oyster

By this time, most of us were started to feel full and so when the fried rice arrive, everyone gave out a groan, but when the waiter went around to serve  the rice, nobody denied him, it was like yong chow fried rice -plus a lot of salt, this (again) was very salty.

Next the waiter came in with a big bowl of yellow looking stuff  ‘chilled mango puree’ , I didn’t quite like it as to me it taste a bit milk-powder-ish, but I think the rest of my colleagues disagree as they were seen happily sipping the dessert.

The last dish was ‘Chinese pastries platter’ which was pretty, 2 different kinda pastries were served inside the wooden basket, one looked ( to us )  like a ciku ( but I think might be something more glamourous) , I found this a bit dry and floury and the filling was a bit short.. The other pastry was shaped like jagung and the pastry was like those for ‘ping pei’ mooncake skin  and the lotus paste  filling was neither too sweet nor too bland, I like this a lot ( as some of the people do not have a sweet tooth, I managed to have 3 of these..oink oink )

dessert

Overall, everyone commented that the meal was enjoyable and value for money
