We were loitering around Subang Jaya on a Sunday ..saw this interesting shop…goshh..what will they think of next ?Hair Asia -  complete with the distinguished red Air Asia Skybus Hair Asia bus- Do you think Mr Fernandaz might be pleased ?

Back to food…

As we were  not familiar with this part of the world, we weren’t sure what Subang Jaya has to offer, we drove a few rounds and decided that we might need some red meat in our system and go for Bak Kut Teh – the string tied meat version. I keep on imagining the pig trotters being tied and manipulated to be kinda like the ancient ladies with the  3 inch dainty  lotus feet, somehow that image made me more hungry. From the introduction in the menu , it says that ‘ string tied meat’ is more aromatic and taste far better, the meat is cleared of fat and blood and tied with a string before cooking, This is to reduce the fat in the meat and to ensure integrity and chewiness of the meat yet retaining it’s juiciness and tender texture while making it more able to adsorb much essence of our ancient recipe herbal soup.  There were a variety of BKT-  the big bone ( tua kut), soft bone ( luan kut) 3 layer fat (sam chan bah), stomach, intestine, ribs ( pai kut), side of the trotter ( ka chak) etc . we were quite at a loss on what to have , but decide to go for half fat/lean ( pan fei sou) RM9.50.

The meat was tender and the aromatic herbal essence had seeped deeply into the meat. The soup was tasty and not too heavy. This was rather enjoyable but I must admit that I didn’t feel there is any difference in the texture of the the meat that was string tied compared with the  ‘no strings attached’ regular BKT. We ordered a serving of char koay to go with our BKT , these were puffy and crunchy and at RM4 , this was somewhat like premium char koay liao lorrrWe had to balanced out the red meat ( read : guilt) with some vegetables and so we ordered  a plate of choy sum @ RM8.50. This was ok For weekdays, there is a breakfast and lunch promo at RM9.90 /pax – which include rice +BKT+ char koay + drinks –  which seemed reasonable The meal , plus 2 rice ( RM1.20/serving) , plus a pot of Chinese tea ( kok po) RM6 came to RM31.90 ( there’s a 5% service charge), Overall , an ok meal but my makan companion keep on harping about having  to pay RM4 for the midget sized char koay. I read other blogs for their reviews and most of the reviews blogged very highly of Pao Xiang, which made my ‘ok meal’ rating kinda like a spoiler lah.
