Thaipusam is, for me - an eye opening, mouth opening and for the faint hearted a pening pening experience. Overall an overwhelming experience.
Overwhelmed by the crowd
Overwhelmed by the sights
Overwhelmed by the kavadis
Overwhelmed by the support of the family members
Family members/ supporters are always close by to the kavadi beares, there were ready with chairs for the bearers to take a rest, some kavadi really look very heavy as they were so elaborately decorated.
Two supporters giving tired limbs a massage, and the other two guys are makeshifts chairs
Overwhelmed by the music
With the musicians in tow, I could see some of the kavadi bearers tap their feet whereas some bearers ( as well as their supporters) were spinning around and around while dancing to the beat.
Overwhelmed by the devotion
This lady (with garland) was dancing and seemed in a trance ( hey eyes had that faraway look). There were several kavadi bearers that I saw, some hold ‘blank’ expressions, some had eyes showing their whites, some look ‘normal’(if you ignore the presence of a spear poking through his/her mouth), some look downright sinister ( taking into account the presence os a spear poking through his/her mouth)
I only realised the significance of tongue piercing when I looked it up at Wikipedia : – The spear pierced through his tongue or cheeks reminds him constantly of Lord Murugan. It also prevents him from speaking and gives great power of endurance.
Overwhelmed by the feats
can’t even see any part of his chest/back !
And interestingly, the only ‘damage’ that I saw from the back of the kavadi bearer are a few ‘small bumps’ on his back after the spears/vel are removed..
and this one tops it all ( for me anyway)
When i saw it from faraway, i had to do a double take, whaaaa da….
He still seemed pretty much alert as i saw him talking to the people around him ( actually was looking like giving instructions) ..Walauuuehhhhh
The things i saw today doesn’t seemed explainable..no blood, no pain ( i don’t see it anyway) ..amazing.. !!
