We passed May Kheng Café a few times before, but as the specialty seemed to be Lum Mien ( as this is on the signboard) , which is not something I fancy, we always give it a pass. But..drawn by the crowded that is inside this aircon establishment – we decide to give it a try.
As we stepped in, we were greeted by a friendly waiter who took us to our table and promptly dropped by again to show us the menu and to take the order, the menu include : fish balls noodle soup, laksa ( on special days only), curry mee, lum mien, wantan mien , and the extra add-ons like fish balls, prawns, otah-otah.
We ordered lum mien ( house specialty – sure must try one mah) and curry mee, you can order the type of noodles that you like : big mee ( udon noodles), normal yellow mee, mee hoon) . Also ordered otah otah and drinks. The noodles, at RM5 per bowl seemed reasonably priced, the otah-otah was RM12 which broke the bank, but we have a soft spot for otah otah lah..
While waiting for the food to be served, we look around the place and it was quite packed almost all the tables were taken up, well, comparing sweating it out under the fans in the other coffee shops, this is quite ‘up-market’ , fully aircon, clean environment and the uniformed staff are courteous and friendly.
The food arrived…hmmmm…
For the lum- mien, I have to say it’s delicious even for a non-lum-mien fan like me, complimented with prawns, taugeh
The curry mee was pretty ok..lemak ( rich) with prawns and chicken although I find that it lack some kind of umph..but can’t place what umph it was missing.. I think one of the reason could be the mee+mee hoon combination that I chose, the mee hoon sorta clump together and soak up the soup, might have been a better choice to just have the yellow noodles san bee-hoon
Before the otah-otah arrive, someone approached our table with a tray of curry puffs, and they look good enough to eat …err..of course they were, I mean, they look very appertising ..it was a bit bigger than the normal sized puff , we brought one ( RM1.50) , the fillings : egg, chicken, potatoes and it was good curry puff ,
The otah otah was a bit different from what I am used to, maybe it’s the tone down version – without the limau-purut and the santan wasn’t very rich -not much spice and overall a bit bland, weirdly, I can’t help thinking of keropok lekor when I was eating it
